Otherworldly. The guitar part on this is like no other Mountain Goats song. The best description I can think of is that it sparkles.

I’ve been catching up on NPR’s Ask Me Another and came across this glorious episode featuring John Darnielle, who participates in a quiz and then plays this intense version of The Best Ever Death Metal Band in Denton, capped off by an hilarious quip by Jonathan Coulton.
This is maybe the best live version of this song I’ve ever heard, with some lyrical substitution and asides, and JD singing in his urgent upper register almost the whole song
