in 2018 maybe we all stop being like “this food is the worst grossest food and i don’t know how anyone could like it ever” as our absolute most gleeful and funniest statement to make and pass around in tumblr posts where u tag your opinion of mushrooms or call something a “hell fruit” or whatever. i know that anyone i present this statement to in seriousness is gonna be like “me hating mushrooms or tomatoes or whatever doesn’t have anything to do with anyone else” but also: some eating disordered person who has five safe foods or whatever is gonna look at that and go “fuck you’re right this thing is actually [inherently bad gross qualities]” because that’s how that shit works! or, like, at best, you’re going to really depress me, who also only has five safe foods even if it’s at this point more for physical illness than ed reasons. i’m going to see you saying things about [perceived and redacted gross traits] of my best friend and only ally, the tomato, and i will probably keep eating tomatoes but i will feel sad and weird about it.
my new move is that any time i worry i am getting too food prescriptivist i just end it with “but the bagel is not in heaven”

i love you both, first of all, you sweet silly googleless children. this is a bialy:
it is like a bagel but not boiled before baking, and also typically smaller and airier. as you can see it is usually baked with onion on top. it is an ashkenazi jewish thing mainly and is usually sold alongside bagels if you’re somewhere that is Doing The New York Jewish Bagel Thing. it can be put to similar cream cheese + smoked fish uses as bagels but really it’s its own thing! good for toasts, good for butter, good to just eat by itself because you’re too lazy to cut it in half.
