today’s activities so far:

-finished knitting (but not weaving in etc) the grey/purple/black hat

-ate extraordinarily decadent leftover ramen for lunch

-studied biology for the gre for a few hours, became smugly assured of my own baseline biology knowledge

-still wearing pajamas

further plans:

-more smug studying

-weave in ends, possibly take off ribbing on blue hat to reknit OR start new red–with-green-and-grey-details hat

-most immediately, shower and put on whichever clothes i find most pleasing, almost certainly a flannel

-prepare important erev rosh hashanah meal of …. salmon & mushroom pasta

-possibly bake honey cake, or just slice up lots of apples to eat with honey or peanut butter&honey spread

a terrible photo but i’m making some fucking hats for the first time in six years/colorwork for the first time ever
i’m going to take off the ribbing on the bottom of the blue hat and reknit it in a smaller gauge so it’s not monstrously loose but like
i’m having fun yk. patterns are good. i’m very happy

if you’ve ever replied to one of my posts please know that 1. i cherish it 2. i have a draft of a text post with your reply in it that i never published because i couldn’t figure out anything to say that i thought was really good & interesting

yesterday our neighbor’s cat was on the porch and we opened our door to look and she just came in and walked around our apartment for like 20 minutes, sniffing. inspecting. then she went home. it was basically the best thing that’s happened to me in like three months

medical stuff, menstruation cw

i have spent a week trying to chase down any of my 3 doctors to give me the kind of birth control pill that i can actually ingest, so i can hopefully stop having continuous bleeding and abdominal cramps, as i have for the past two months

the conclusion so far is “your insurance won’t cover the brand. here, after several days, is a prescription for the generic. your insurance won’t cover that either, and it costs $637/month. also, we lied to you when we said your insurance covered the original iud insertion that has caused these other problems, so that will be an additional thousand dollars. there is no way for you to actually speak directly to anyone with the power to prescribe you something, so any new step in any direction on this problem will take an entire day to resolve and require you to contact several people and miss at least an hour of work per day.”

i am literally not worth any of this money, my problems are not several thousand dollars of serious, it would be most appropriate for me to decide to just keep functioning as-is because acting like i have solvable problems is 1. an inaccurate picture that will make me more unhappy than i would be if i just assimilated “bleeds, hurts” into my self-image 2. just the kind of thing that got me into this mess in the first place

time 4 more knitting advice requests:

i am reasonably certain that i will continue to be knitting things, since i’ve been knitting on and off for 12 years. as such i want to buy a set of good needles so i actually have the sizes i need around & am not prevented from fixing gauge problems by the fact that i only have sixes in the appropriate circular needle length, for instance. i think that means that an interchangeable set makes sense? i have a pair of the size 8 knitpicks caspian wood needles from their interchangeable set that were discounted w/ my last yarn order, and i do like them a lot, but i’ve seen reviews that the needle tips start to fray after a while of use so idk if they’re worth purchasing. also they only go down to size 4, and ideally i would have needles down to size 2 at least, although if that’s generally not standard with kits it’s not going to kill me to buy the smaller sizes separately.

generally i like metal or wood more than plastic, because i have certain aesthetic preferences about my day-to-day life, and i think prefer wood slightly to metal for being a little quieter and having slightly better grip, but would at least strongly consider metal for better longevity/sturdiness.

what are your takes? do you have brands you prefer? how do you acquire knitting needles usually?

i am driven absolutely to distraction by the distracting/comforting/satisfying (same thing?) thought of/experience of knitting— intermediate skill mastery + adjustable difficulty/focus + aesthetic/research/thoroughness/discernment taste-ego satisfaction + crucially, the sensory-physical involvement, hand motions to quiet already heavily suppressed needs for (hyper)activity, softness, the extreme indulgence of buying knitting needles as much for their beauty as their functionality
