TIL The Beatles approached Stanley Kubrick to direct a LOTR movie starring themselves. Tolkien killed the project as a result of his hate for The Beatles. A hate developed after moving 3 doors down from The Beatles in 1964, who irked him with the “indescribable” noise from their practice sessions.

the man who spents hundreds of pages describing trees and meals and worked out the linguistics of multiple fictional languages and the entire cosmology of his fictionsl world called the Beatles’ rehearsal sounds “indescribable”

my ideal twilight au is one where bella just befriends edward and falls in love with rosalie instead, but she and edward are best friends and they do stupid shit together. like she calls him up at 2am like “hey can you take me to walmart?” and he does it no questions asked. they walk around walmart at 2am together and he takes her to mcdonald’s afterwards. they send each other memes. they are horribly depressed together

time 4 more knitting advice requests:

i am reasonably certain that i will continue to be knitting things, since i’ve been knitting on and off for 12 years. as such i want to buy a set of good needles so i actually have the sizes i need around & am not prevented from fixing gauge problems by the fact that i only have sixes in the appropriate circular needle length, for instance. i think that means that an interchangeable set makes sense? i have a pair of the size 8 knitpicks caspian wood needles from their interchangeable set that were discounted w/ my last yarn order, and i do like them a lot, but i’ve seen reviews that the needle tips start to fray after a while of use so idk if they’re worth purchasing. also they only go down to size 4, and ideally i would have needles down to size 2 at least, although if that’s generally not standard with kits it’s not going to kill me to buy the smaller sizes separately.

generally i like metal or wood more than plastic, because i have certain aesthetic preferences about my day-to-day life, and i think prefer wood slightly to metal for being a little quieter and having slightly better grip, but would at least strongly consider metal for better longevity/sturdiness.

what are your takes? do you have brands you prefer? how do you acquire knitting needles usually?

Object of the Week: Fresnel Cube, Sean Augustine March, Brooklyn, New York, United States, designed in 2015, made in 2017. 2017.4.3.

March’s table lamp is a product born of the Internet age. He cultivated a growing interest in the science of light by watching YouTube videos by physicists and was introduced to the optical-grade dichroic glass used in the lamp through his activity in online forums. The lamp’s two nested boxes are lighted with a concealed LED bulb, creating an infinite mirror box that appears to be illuminated from its edges. Because the metallic coating on the surface of dichroic glass refracts and reflects different wavelengths of light in different conditions, the reflected boxes appear in a range of distinct colors, from hot pink to cool blues and greens.
